In recognition of the nation’s highest quality hospitals, The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit hospital watchdog organization, announced today the recipients of its 2017 Top Hospitals award. This year, New Jersey, California, Florida and Massachusetts had strong showings, with 10 or more hospitals in each of those states receiving the elite distinction.

HONOLULU – With the need for donated organs far exceeding the number available for transplantation in the U.S., the American Medical Association (AMA) adopted policy during its Interim Meeting this week aimed at increasing organ donation rates—particularly among minority populations with historically low donation rates.

The Patient Safety Act received certification today from the Massachusetts Attorney General's office. The Patient Safety Act will dramatically improve patient safety in Massachusetts hospitals by setting a safe maximum limit on the number of patients assigned to a nurse at one time, while providing flexibility to hospitals to adjust nurses' patient assignments based on specific patient needs. Currently there are no requirements for hospitals to provide an adequate level of nursing care in such areas as the emergency department, medical-surgical floors, maternity units or psychiatric units.

NEW HYDE PARK, NY – In the wake of the devastation that Hurricane Harvey inflicted upon the Houston area, the need for medical care has risen to crisis levels for those impacted by the flooding and who rely on their healthcare providers to manage existing chronic conditions. In response, Northwell Health has connected with its counterparts at the Houston–based MD Anderson Cancer Center to offer assistance to match the hospital‘s specific needs. Within 24 hours after requesting help from its clinicians, Northwell has enrolled more than 600 employees interested in volunteering. Beginning Monday, September 4th, the first Northwell team of 40 will be deployed to Houston.
